Where should I stay in Marbella?

We are a family of four visiting Marbella this summer. We have two children aged 5 and 7 and would like to stay in an area that´s close to a beach and not far from the center, with shops and cafes (preferably walking distance). We will be staying in Marbella for two weeks so have time to explore not only Marbella but other areas around...maybe some water parks or zoos?? It looks like the "Marbella area" is spread out from Estepona to Malaga with lots of things to do in between. Where is the best location for us? Marbella center? San Pedro? Also, my parents may be joining us so we are not sure if we should rent a villa in Marbella or stay in a hotel. Help! Not sure what to do.
