Varicose Vein Laser Treatment
Varicose veins are caused by an abnormal accumulation of blood in the veins causing them to expand, blood then collects there easily, especially when standing for long periods of time. They are mainly caused by a weakness in the walls and valves of the superficial veins. Currently one in every three adults are affected by varicose veins. Today we will learn how this condition can be treated, as well as the care required following varicose vein surgery.
How can varicose veins be treated?
Laser is one of the most common techniques for the treatment of varicose veins. In treating the diseased vein, it promotes venous return, alleviates pain and prevents complications.
Before undergoing varicose vein laser treatment, a consultation with a specialist is required. This treatment cannot be used in all veins and only a specialist will be able to advise in this respect.
To perform this technique the surgeon makes a small 1 to 2 mm incision below the knee through which a fibre optic catheter is inserted into the vein, the laser beam then emits energy to the walls of the vein causing coagulation of the desired area.
Surgery lasts approximately 1 hour and is performed under local anaesthetic.
Care following varicose vein surgery. What happens afterwards?
Following varicose vein laser surgery the post-operative care is minimal. As surgery is not complicated or painful, normally the patient returns home immediately afterwards and is able to walk and continue with their normal daily routine. One possible consequence of this procedure is bruising to the inner thigh, for this reason patients need to wear compression stockings for 10 to 20 days afterwards, these have a preventative and therapeutic effect, the pressure they apply helps to improve the circulation in the legs.
The team at
