need info please

My husband and I and our 2 children ages 22 and 18 will be visiting Marbella from January 22nd-29th, 2011. we would like to know if an overnight trip to Morocco is a good idea? Also what other tours out of Marbella would be good to do for day trips.

We are totally new to the area and are figuring out the best things to do and whether to rent a car or take day trips plus the one overnight trip to Morocco if its worth it. We are staying at the Marriott Beach resort which I assume is right in Marbella.

If you could please let us know your thoughts of best things to do and any costs it would be more then helpful.
Thank you so much,
Amy pollack

Visiting Marbella part 1

You are spending a whole week in Marbella, so you have plenty of time to take a couple of day trips around the Costa del Sol, so I recommend that you rent a car. You will need it anyway to get around Marbella. There is a bus system, but if you can afford it then a car is a better option and gives you more flexibility.

As your kids are older day trips are a nice option after you have spent at least a day or two discovering Marbella. I suggest you get settled in your first day and then follow our One Day Tour Guide. We have listed here the most significant sights in Marbella and all the "must sees".

If you are a golfer (see our Family Sports Forum for recommendations on golf clubs) or a sunbather, you might want to hit the golf course or the beach while you are here. Marbella is renowned for its golf courses and the weather usually permits for a nice day out playing golf or sun tanning. Although I find it too cold to swim in the sea you may find that you can still spend time on the beach soaking up the sun even if you are just in shorts and a t-shirt. You will even see people jumping in the water and sunbathing in their swimsuits, so it´s just a matter of how resilient you are to the cold.

Visiting Marbella part 2

There are many excursions around Marbella that are interesting and culturally eye opening. You should review our guide on Excursions to get some ideas and read our own experience. My most recommended one day trips for you are to visit:

Ronda (only a 45 minute drive from Marbella)
Tarifa (1 hour 15 min) from Marbella)
Granada (2 hours from Marbella)
Cadiz (2 hours from Marbella)

Gibraltar is also close by (45 min), however it´s not Spanish and I find most visitors to Spain go there only for the sake of saying they´ve been to Gibraltar. Personally, I find that there are more interesting places to visit on the Costa del Sol when you are limited on time.

A trip to Morocco can be very exotic and exciting, however I definitely think you should take more than a day to visit. Overnight is a better option, a couple of nights even better. You can read the experience of one of our readers during their trip to Morocco, however, I would take it with a grain of salt. Bear in mind that she had smaller children. If you do opt for a one day tour, then make sure you wake up very early and get a full day in. If you opt for an overnight, then I don´t recommend staying in the port city of Tanger. In our Morocco page we recommend a couple of websites that I find useful for planning a trip to Morocco. Personally, I haven´t taken the ferry across to Morocco from Spain, so I can´t give you my own opinion, but I´ve been to Marrakech and Casablanca and had a fabulous time. For this trip we took a quick plane ride from Marbella to Marrakech, but we spent at least four or five nights.
