I don’t suppose anybody would believe me if I try to palm Dizzy off as my mother, so to commemorate this day see her photo complete with flowers from one of our sons.
A last minute booking proved to be a compromise in our preferred lunching time, but we settle on a one o’clock service at La Sala, where in the past we have always enjoyed it as a buzzing place to be.
Having an intolerance to anything cooked in Olive oil I consult with manager Luke to guide me through the main course possibilities open to me, and unfortunately these did not include the roast beef that I was hoping for. He recommended the fillet steak that he said would be butterflyed before cooking - but I get ahead of myself - We start with a Chicken Liver Parfait with toasted Ciabatta and Apple sauce, and a Smoked Salmon Parcel with Lettuce, Avocado and a Horseradish Crème Fraiche, both as pretty as a picture, and delicious to eat. The other main course was Roast pork with masses of Crackling, an enormous Yorkshire pud. and duck fat roasted potatoes, that got the thumbs up from the MUM.
My fillet steak however, arrived un-buterflyed like a Tornado, unseasoned, and had very little flavour. This was accompanied by cherry tomatoes, a Béarnaise sauce and lukewarm chips, all to be consumed using a blunt steak knife. which was eventually replaced with a second blunt steak knife! Fortunately my wife donated one of her yummy Baked potatoes to me! After the meal, I made my thoughts known to Luke, but a mere apology from him for these deficiencies, I found to be dismissive, and below the high standards that we had previous come to expect from La Sala.
