High profile required for International Literacy Day
by: Rod Younger

Literacy is the fundamental building block of society so International literacy day deserves a much higher profile than has hitherto been the case.  Giving away free books is fine but they are only of use to people who can read – we need to be doing more to address literacy, not only in third world and developing countries, but also in the developed world where it is still poor amongst certain parts of society in a number of countries.

Getting the 3 Rs taught properly at school is the first step in the process but this also needs to be reinforced by family, friends and the wider society by encouraging reading and writing.  For me, a key factor in encouraging people to read is the fact that they can learn so much via the written word, i.e. they can acquire knowledge, or they can let their imaginations fly with a good story.  You only need to look at the success of the Harry Potter series to see how it encouraged generations of children to read.

Despite the information overload it generates, the Internet can play a key part in raising literacy, primarily by making interesting content widely and easily available to large numbers of the world’s population.  Thus, online resources such as Wikipedia are now an integral part of knowledge acquisition (even if it can be unreliable!).  Likewise, online bookshops such as Books4Spain can and should, play a very important role in providing users with easy access to interesting and relevant books and also to encourage people to read more about a particular topic.

Time will tell but I would like to think that when the next International Literacy Day comes round, Books4Spain will have played a part in encouraging people to read more about Spain, its history and culture.
